Mo Shaolong, born in 1989 in Linzhou, China, currently lives and works in Shanghai.
"Mo Shaolong's selection of images in his paintings reveals subjectivity; his stylized brushwork and elegiac use of color present a social margin that spans time. In the artist's view, figures and messages, subjects and backgrounds, through constant renewal, together shape the construction of both image and the everyday. The works do not seek to restore narrative, but rather to record and awaken connections."
Mo Shaolong's practice in 2025 unfolds in two successive phases of exploration. Before 2025,Through his use and reflection of 3D modeling software, Mo seeks to redefine the long-standing genre of portraiture. Mo sees himself as belonging to the generation informed by globalisation, the Internet, and digital technology. In this sense, his work hints at the fact that every present-day individual is a cyborg, whose ethos exhibits a human-computer hybridity. Hence, for Mo, contemporary portraiture must capture and express the immense pain and confusion of human beings who must be equipped with digital technology. Such human-computer hybridity is merely the latest symptom of the complex and lengthy relationship between humans and technology, or in Mo's words, 'the error', and should be the starting point for our reflection on the myth of human creativity. After 2025, Mo Shaolong's works reexamine the relationship between the individual and both imagery and the context of the times. While continuing to take figures as the primary subject matter of his creations, Mo Shaolong begins to focus on the changes of the era he has lived through and their associations and resonances in the present, employing an image-documentary-like pictorial language and touch-and-click-style brushstrokes to shape a series of paintings in "single-channel" colors.
